Attractions
The Sunrise Trail on the Northumberland Shore offers visitors beautiful
beaches, seascapes, quaint villages and towns to explore as well as many
shops, galleries, restaurants and golf courses to enjoy.
Jost Vineyards
Your vacation in Malagash would not be complete without a visit to Jost Vineyards. The facility, including wine store, self-serve deli, outdoor terrace with BBQ and the Vintage Loft Gift Shop welcomes tens of thousands of visitors annually. While some Jost wines are available through Nova Scotia Liquor Store outlets, others are only available at the winery store in Malagash. You will be served by a friendly, knowledgeable staff who will assist you in selecting the perfect vintage. Summer hours are 9am-6pm 7 days a week.
Malagash Salt Mine Museum
Malagash is the site of the first rock salt mine in Canada. From when it opened in 1918 until its closure in 1959, it was a major source of work for the local people. The Museum features displays, written material, and artifacts about the mine and other natural and social history of the area. The Salt Mine Museum is located halfway between the Moon Jelly Beach House and Blue Sea House. Open June 15 - September 15, the hours of operation are from Monday to Saturday 10am-5pm and on Sunday from 12 noon -6pm. For more information call 1-902-257-2407.
Blue Sea Provincial Park
Nearly 2 km of beautiful sand beach and the warm waters of the
Northumberland Strait await you at Blue Sea Provincial Park. There are
picnic areas, washrooms and change facilities available. Open seasonally
from sunrise to sunset.
Wallace Museum
Just a short drive from Malagash is the picturesque village of Wallace. The diverse cultural heritage of Wallace is well displayed and documented at the museum's newly expanded facility and throughout the beautifully kept acreage. For the outdoor enthusiast, there are approximately four kilometers of walking trails surrounded by beautiful historical gardens. Both the trails and gardens are open to the public. The museum also hosts garden teas periodically through the summer.
Wentworth Valley
In Autumn, there is no better place to experience the fall colors than here
in Northern Nova Scotia. The beautiful Wentworth Valley is a twenty five
minute drive from the vacation properties and is the ideal place to enjoy
the rich, autumn foliage. In the winter, Wentworth is also the place for
downhill skiing. The ski hill is 815 vertical feet high with 20 alpine
trails, a ½ Pipe, Terrain Park and a variety of trails that will challenge
any skier from beginner to expert.
Tatamagouche
As well as many craft stores and museums, the village of Tatamagouche offers
full services to visitors. There is a hospital, dental office, pharmacy,
grocery store, liquor store, gas station, Laundromat, bank, and Sunrise
Beach Golf Course (Brule) here. The Tatamagouche Creamery is home to a
Saturday morning market as well as community festivals. A short drive
further down the Sunrise Trail is the historic Balmoral Grist Mill and the
Sutherland Steam Mill. On the same road, and well worth the stop, is the
Pork Shop which specializes in Nova Scotia grown pork.
Pugwash
Located approximately 25km north of Saltscapes Vacation Properties is the
village of Pugwash. There is a hospital, dental office, pharmacy, grocery
store, liquor store, Laundromat, bank, Northumberland Links Golf Course and
many craft and gift stores here including Seagull Pewter. Pugwash is also
home to Windsor Salt which produces over one million tonnes of salt
annually.
In 1957, Pugwash gained world attention when Cyrus Eaton convened the first
Thinkers' Conference. The conference was designed to promote world peace and
understanding. In 1995 Cyrus Eaton was awarded a Novel Peace Prize for his
efforts.
Golf
For the golf enthusiast, there are three golf courses within close proximity to both houses - Northumberland Links Golf & Country Club in Pugwash, Fox Harb'r in Wallace and Sunrise Beach in Brule. There are many more courses within an hours drive of each property.
